Ansley Roan June 18, 2012 The year marks the
centenary of the birth of Alan
Turing, who is considered
the father of the modern
computer. Turing, who was
also known for his code breaking during World War
II, was a pioneer in artificial
intelligence. To mark this
anniversary year, Big
Questions Online will publish
four essays by Professor Jack Copeland. Dr. Copeland is a professor of
Philosophy at the University
of Canterbury, New Zealand,
and he directs the Turing
Archive for the History of
Computing there. He is considered a leading
authority on Turing's work.
His books include The
Essential Turing (Oxford
University Press), and Alan
Turing’s Electronic Brain (Oxford University Press). His
essays will appear on the site
beginning in the fall.
