It is pretty easy to register your business name in Nigeria via the CAC (Corporate Affairs Commission). The good news is that this can now be done online from the CAC portal. Traditionally, you would be required to visit a CAC office closest to you for the business name search and registration. I know of one at Yaba, near Sabo bus stop. There's another one at Alausa, close to Kara bus stop. But visiting an office isn't necessary anymore as you can now do it all on their online platform.

According to the Minister of the Trade and Investment Industry, Dr Olusegun Aganga, “Nigerians will no longer have to incur extra costs and will not travel to the CAC’s office to register their businesses”. He added that it was a joint initiative with the Federal Ministry of Communications Technology. He explained that the portal is sophisticated enough to accept all electronic payment platforms like interswitch, e-transact, Visa cards, Verve cards, American express e.t.c.

He listed easy access to payment of the commission’s services, reduction in cost for the accredited agents and ordinary persons as many benefits of the new online portal. Aganga said that the Federal Government was committed to deploying more positive initiatives towards a friendly business environment climate in the country.

Earlier, Dr Omobola Johnson, the Minister of Communication Technology, said that online registration would enable users to make payment services from the comfort of their homes. Johnson said that the portal would assist in revenue generation for the commission as well block all financial leakages.

To get started with your business registration with the CAC, make sure you have your National ID Number (NIN) provided to you by NIMC. Then, go and create your customer business registration portal account/access. Also, make sure you download the user guide and read the FAQs so you could have all the required information you need to successfully register your business with the CAC.

After creating an account, you will be asked to fill in your choice business name. You have two business name options to type in for the business name search. Also, for the basic company information, you will be asked for the business classification, company type, reason for availability search and the main objective of the business. In addition to this, you will be asked for your date of birth, nationality, country of residence, residential address, identity type, identity number and identity issue state. After these, you will need to make an online payment of ₦500 for the name search. CAC will notify you with more details after the name search has been concluded.
