Text: II Timothy 3:l6,l7.

Before moving into the discussional part of the topic I will like to give you a brief word on what the Bible is.

The Bible contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe itw to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer.

It is the traveler's map, the pilgrim's staff, the pilot's compass, the soldier's sword, and the Christian's charter. Here Paradise is restored, Heaven opened, and the gates of hell disclosed.

Now to our discussion. The Bible has been called several names. These are: the Holy Bible, the Word, the Word of God (Mark 7:l3), The Holy Scriptures (Romans l:2), the Scriptures (John 5:39), the book of the Lord (Isaiah 34:l6), etc.

The best description of a man, thing or substance is the description of the character, properties, nature and characteristics of that specific substance. Therefore, the best description of the Bible can be found in the Bible itself. The striking and touching feature of the nature or character of the Bible in our text is that it is through the inspiration of God, i.e it is inspired. We are told that "All scripture is given by the inspiration of God." God, at the creation of man on the sixth made Adam from the ground who initially was lifeless. But as soon as God breathed into this "statue", it became a living Soul - called Adam. In this same way God gave His word as His breathe, which in turn gives us hope and life. It is thus the living word of God.

Because of the inspiration of God in the Bible (Word), the Word has obtained unique, certain and uncommon characteristics that distinguish it from all other books and words of men. Firstly, its wonderful and uncommon unity. Over forty different writers wrote the sixty six books of the Bible (thirty nine in the old testament and twenty seven in the new testament) during a period of about l,800 years, yet there is a complete and unique harmony in the information given to man, through God.

Secondly, when one looks at the versatility of this book of the Law, one discovers that it meets the spritual, physical, and other needs of men and touches the lives (heart) and times of all men of all races of all times. The Word of God is a fire and two edged sword, that as the power to pierce into the lives, heart and times of men. Thirdly, it is superior to all other books ever published in the world.

Fourthly, it is the most sought and read book ever. The Bible which is known as the christian's (pilgrim's) sword is a book that is read frequently and constantly by believers and it is sought mostly by people, so as to know the mind of God and His promises for our lives. Fiftly, its influence on men and nations is unbeatable. The Bible has a strong influence on men and nations, since it is the Word of God that carries fire and power, and supercedes the word of men. Sixtly, the story of its preservation over the centuries past is matchless. Sevently, its prophecies and their fufillment challenge all hearts that read and notice them. Eightly, it is the Bible that speaks and educate man about Jesus Christ - the Son of God - that History (the Word) cannot deny His presence and purpose in the world, but testify about it though not all men believe and accept His presence and purpose (ministry) on earth. But this same Jesus (that the whole of humanity cannot deny) testified of the authenticity of the word of God.

All these and many more go to proved that the Holy Bible is inspired by God. Sir Walter Scott has this to say about the Bible - a proof of its inspiration by God. "Happy is he to whom God has given grace to read, to fear, and to obey its content. And better had they never been born who read to doubt or read to scorn."
