I am having confusion on this matter. Why do we (men) pay for it when we marry? Is it for busness, as thanks to her family or what?

the term "bride price" is often used interchangeably in nigeria with "dowry" by by both writers and others concerned with customary law.such practice, however, may lead to confusion in thought as "dowry stricto sensu" means the property which a woman brings to her husband.on the other hand bride price may be defined as any gift or payment,in money, natural produce, brass rods, kind of property whatsoever,to a parent or guardian of a female person account of a marriage of that person which is intended or has taken place.whether bride price takes the form of a gift or payment depends on the customary law of each locality.
it is to prove that the bride is fully belong to the groom
It is merely a tradition followed by a majority of ethnic groups. Indians do not pay a price to the bride's familly, but the bride's family does so. An Indian elder once explained that it is a token to assist the man in starting a new life with their daughter.

But I see it as not necessary; are we selling our daughters?
The most funny part of this is that, nowadays, the girl's parents dont take it home again; they return it back to the groom's family right there.
Then, what is the use?
To me, It's meaningless.

Oh ! they return it back o; they would say to people right there that they are not selling their daughter and that they will not take it: they return it back immediately; so why instituting it again?
