There are few reasons why people are concerned that mobile phones might have the potential to cause certain types of cancer or other health related problems. Cell phones emit radiofrequency energy (radiowaves), a form of non-ionising radiation from their antennas. The number of cell phone users has increased markedly and there is also an increase in the duration of time people spend on the phone each day. Currently, there is no consistent evidence that non-ionising radiation increases cancer risk. The only consistenly recognized bio-hazard of radiofrequency energy is heating. An example is the ability of microwave ovens to heat food. However, it is not sufficiently measurable to increase body temperature. According to reports from recent health research, it has been concluded that cell phone radiofrequencx radiation do not show an increased risk of brain tumours or other cancers of the head and neck region.
However, further research is still underway and in the meanwhile, cell phone users can do the following to reduce their exposure to radiofrequency energy.

1. Use the headset or speaker: Headsets emit much less radiation than phones. Wireless headsets emit continuous, low-level radiation, so do not leave yours on your ear for prolonged periods.
2. Text more and talk less: Phones emit less radiation when sending texts than during voice calls. Texting keeps radiation away from your head.
3. Hold phone away from your ear and body when you are talking. When using a headset, don't put the phone in your pocket, in a bag, purse or a nearby surface. The amount radiation absorbed by your head and body reduces dramatically with even a small distance. Cell phone manufacturers suggest the user keeps the phone an inch away from the body.
4. Call when the signal is strong: Fewer bars mean the phone must work harder to broadcast its signal to the cell mast. Research shows that radiation exposure increases dramatically when cell phone signals are weak.
5. Limit children's phone use: It is a fact that young children's brains absorb twice as much cell phone radiation as those of adults.
6. Do not sleep near your cell phone.
7. Avoid use in a moving vehicle: In a moving vehicle, the cell phone antenna is constantly searching for signal. Therefore, radiation emissions are increased. While it's tempting to make calls while travelling, you will minimize your risks by sticking to stationary locations where there is a strong signal.
8. Dial then stretch: Your phone is workinh hardest when trying to connect. Dial and then extend your arm until you hear the recipient's voice. Same happens when you answer a call.

NOTE: When your children use the internet to search for images for projects or anything related to school work, please encourage them to use kiddle instead of Google. Kiddle is a child-specific search engine supported by Google, which prevents the appearance of things that ar not suitable for them.
