Well, if l may say: family life or marital life is also a relationship and not only the one before marriage; it depends on how individuals looks at it.

You 've said it yourself, it is family or married life. No longer a casual relationship. We are talking of blood and flesh now. Not playing around like prats do.

Having business with a partner is business relationship: having husband or wife is a marital relationship: having s3xual partner is a s3xual relationship: having fiancee or girlfriend is an ante-marriage relationship.
In marriage, you 'relate' or 'communicate' with your wife and children.
So if he refers to marriage as relationship, he is still on the way.
