It doesn't happen by magic, one needs the grace of God to achieve this.

The word of God is the ultimate determinant also coupled with prayer.
There are families who pray and fast like anything, but because they dont understand the work of God, the families are in shamble and fighting, rancor etc are the order of their days.
As you've said, we need the grace for peace and all the above cannot even be done without the grace.
