Dictionary as defined by Colins English Dictionary is a reference resource in printed or electronic form, that consists of an alphabetical list of words with their meanings and parts of speech, and often a guide to accepted pronounciation and syllabification, irregular inflections of words, derived words of different parts of speech and etymologies.The dictionary is one of the research and discovery tool for students at all level of education.The students need to know how to make the best use of their dictionary, so as to gain maximally from it.
Using the Dictionary.
l. The dictionary should be one of the books most often used in your home.This will familarize you with new words and meanings.
2. Place the dictionary where you can find it easily and use it often.Do not place your dictionary anywhere, have a designed place to keep your dictionary. 
3. Place the dictionary where you usually do your reading.This will make it easy for you to search for new words and meanings you encountered while reading.You can also install one on your computer or smartphone. 
4. Do not postpone checking an unfamiliar word in your dictionary, as their is tendency of forgetting about it completely, leading to a lost knowledge ("a postponed decision is a missed opportunity").
5. Use a dictionary that is detailed enough to contain more than just spellings.Your dictionary should contain extensive definitions, word origins, notes on usage, etc.
6. It is also a good idea to carry a pocket dictionary with more concise definitions wherever you go.This will make it easier for you to search for any new thing you sense in your surroundings.
7. Get use to the idea of turning your dictionary often.This will familarize you with the usage of the dictionary and new things.
8. Crossword puzzles are an excellent way to develop your vocabulary.Do the puzzles that appear in your local daily or weekly newspapers using your dictionary.Newspapers like dailytimes, the punch, the guardian, etc.
