Mr Paul
Mod.
Use of shortened forms of English words by our students has terrible, negative effects on their vocabulary building; any student who wants to develop him/herself in English rarely uses shortened forms of words; it should also be noted that any proper noun must not start with small letter, but many students, even on a site like easynaija use small letters to start proper nouns; some also use ' i ' referring to themselves, which should be ' l ' ; not only that, improper use of punctuation marks etc have degraded our English Grammar, especially in Nigerian schools and universities. I have discovered in my findings, five helping tips for developing oneself in English Languge. These tips are summed up in an acronym(SPREWDTH); these tips are below:-
 SP=Speaking English.
 RE=Reading English.
 W=Writing In English.
 D=Dictionary Consultation.
 TH=Thinking In English.
These tips have helped a lot of people who have applied them in their day-to-day studies.

This is one major thing that has negatively affected student's education alot thereby imbibing in them the spirit of pessimism.
Students most especially in their WAEC, JAMB, GCE & NECO examinations do misuse useful punctuation marks like ; ' /, \ ! _ - { } [ ] ( ) etc Also, idiomatic expressions, as well as useful and correct english terms e.g If i was you(incorrect), If i were you(correct, cos u are not them rather placing urself in their shoes. You & me(incorrect) rather its You and I(correct).
My Say
Now some do use excessive abbreviations like ie(which is to say "that is"), etc(and many more), e.g(example given). While others use big vocabularies in these various examinations. Forgeting that its their only medium to higher institutions. Meanwhile, not all examination script markers accepts that.
  Instead of a student to have an A in English language, he/she ends up with B3. Why so, wrong use of useful English terms.
To avoid this Study hard and go for researches also with textbooks. They helps alot.
Thanks Mavisdby, Many students who pass English with A's in WAEC, NECO etc passed because they chۈted, but the future of these students is our concern; and if nothing is done to stop exam malpractices, many students will continue to have fake success and the future of our nation's education is in great danger. As you said, the solution is studying hard so as to stand out and become good leaders in the nearest future.

Even with the use of fake successes, a graduate who ends up becoming a doctor finds it difficult to treat leg injury. If he had studied hard and had proved himself as one of the best, the injury would be but a tiny thing for him to treat. So you see, even if they use expo all through-out the university,college or polytecnics, it will still affect them in future.
  Those always seeking for expos will only regret it cos it will surely backfire.
 For whatever a man soweth, that shall he reap.
As for the cure to exam malpractices, schools should organise seminars for their students to teach the on "Dangers Of Exam Malpractices" So they would learn and refrain themselves from that known to be Exam Malpractices.
 Also we are to pray for our children(Nigeria Students) so God would help them 2 be great now and great in future to come and not them being great now just 2 gain praises of men as most intelligent & brilliant then in future to come, become very small.
 Emmanuel.

Another detected error that negatively affects vocabulary building of students is addiction to Pidgin English. I saw a letter written by a polytechnic student sometime ago, sincerely speaking, it didnt worth a letter written by a primary six pupil. l wondered why, but later discovered that the boy does speak pidgin too much. lt seems pidgin is now the order of the day among many students; be careful of this parasite/cancerworm/ palmerworm/caterpillar which has destroyed the vacabularies of many students today. To be candid, pidgin is not meant for schorlars; its for those who didnt go to school, but want communicate to people in English-like language. To cap it all, l don't totally condemn pidgin, but my point is that addiction to it can totally destroy one's vocabulary building.

The worst part of it is that teachers of nowadays are not what can be written home about as Most teachers uses this same pidgin to communicate and interract with their students.
  Informal education of nowadays as a result of this wrong method of interraction is hardly differentiated from formal.
 We need disciplined teachers to teach, correct the bad attitudes of our children and not to spoil them. Only few teachers are discipline. May God help us.
Dis is a kumbula kwolegeable kwarshokwor that destroy our stdents etc.as studnts and others spell wel, wrte wel & speak
thanks to u all.
From the beginning of this topic, we( l and Marvisdby) have explained in details some helpful hints for building our English vocabularies and grammar.
        Moreover, be careful of wrong usage of lexical & auxiliary verbs. See examples below:-
 Have you eat? (incorrect)
 Have you eaten? (correct)
 Have you write the note?(incorrect)
 Have you written the note?(correct);
 Did you sat on this chair yesterday?(incorrect)
 Did you sit on this chair yesterday?(correct); and other common similar mistakes that are surprisingly made by many of our students.
 He has eaten (correct)-- not he have eaten.
 He has eaten before l came here yesterday(incorrect);
 He had eaten before l came here yesterday(correct).
 Note***
 Auxiliary Verbs are: 'Has' , 'Have' and 'Had'.
 'Has' is singular, 'Have' is plural while 'Had' is the past tense of both 'has' and 'have'.
 Examples of lexical(main) verbs are eat, run, sit, stand etc.

Also, don't forget the use of "ought to", which can also be used with another auxiliary verb.
E.g. "I ought to have done the work"; which is different from
"I ought to do the work".

All the above rules help in building our English grammar.
Also, many students fail WAEC English paper just because of the afore-mentioned common mistakes.
