How To Fix iPhone Error 3194 from iTunes during iPhone Restore - 3194 Fix for iPhone and iPod Touch

The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occured (3194)

Do you get the above error 3194 when attempting to restore your iPhone or iPad to an earlier version? You will find a fix for that in this post.

First, let me say that you cannot just restore to an earlier iOS version. The only thing you can do is upgrade to the current version. For example, if you are using i0S 5 then you should upgrade to 5.currentversion
Don't ask me why, just read on.

Important!: You must be running the current version of iTunes for this fix to work.

1. Exit iTunes and disconnect your iPhone from the pc

2. From your pc, open your host file. On windows this file is located at c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
On Mac OS X, it's location is /etc/hosts
Open this file as administrator. If you still cannot get the file to open, here's what to do:

a) Double click on the file. (It doesnt have an extension)
b) When windows asks you for a program to use, choose Notepad.
Alternatively, you can drag and drop the file in a notepad window.

3. Copy these and add them to the bottom of the contents of the host file.
#74.208.105.171
gs.apple.com

OR
#74.208.10.249
gs.apple.com

Just make sure that it's at the very bottom of the hosts file.

Note: If you already have any i.p address from Saurik's servers in your host file, then just put # in front of it.

4. Save the file.

5. Connect your iPhone back to the computer.
6. Re-Open iTunes

Update:
7. Important! Put your iPhone in pwned DFU mode if you're restoring with a custom IPSW. Using the regular DFU mode would most likely give you an iTunes error 1602.
This confused the first few commenters of this article.

Pwned DFU can be achieved with either redsnow or iREB. On redsnow, go to Extras -> Pwned DFU.

Later, I'll write a full article on how to put iDevices in pwned dfu mode.

If you do not already know how to do this please see How to put your iPhone in pwned DFU Recover mode.

Step 8. Hold the Shift key and click on Restore
9. Click on the i0S 5.currentversion that you are trying to upgrade or "restore" to. You must have downloaded this earlier.
10. This most likely should work.

OTHER THINGS TO TRY IF THE FIX DIDN'T WORK FOR YOU

Option 1: Try doing the fix without the # in front of the i.p address (This works for some)
Option 2: Try renaming the hosts file to something else e.g blablahosts. (This has worked for many people but make sure you rename it back to hosts when you are done with the iPhone restore)

Option 3: Try deleting the hosts file (Copy and save it somewhere else first!!). Put it back after your iPhone restore.

In rare cases where the above fixes do not work for you (especially when trying to restore to iOS version 4.3.3), the TinyUmbrella software can be used to fix this iTunes 3194 error.

How to fix iTunes error 3194 using TinyUmbrella

Step 1: Download and install the lastest version of TinyUmbrella to your pc from cache.firmwareumbrella.com/downloads/
Step 2: After installing, launch the software, then click on the Advanced tab.
Step 3: Look for Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit then uncheck the box.

Step 4: Click Apply Changes
Step 5: Restart your computer, put your device in pwned DFU, then try restoring your iPhone again via iTunes.

One of those must work. Please comment and tell us which one worked for you.
Cheers.

Hi Syed, since you use a locked iPhone 4 which runs iOS 6, i'd advice you to jailbreak using the >>latest<< version of Sn0wbreeze and then restore from iTunes using the jailbreaked firmware.

You will find detailed information in this post --->> http://www.easynaija.com/iphone/how-to-jailbreak-iphone-4-or-iphone-3gs-ios6-using-sn0wbreeze/

It should solve your problem.

For iOS6 please use Snowbreeze, as suggested by Chris.

I have a iPhone 4 CDMA tht was jailbroken through snowbreeze the ipsw was 6.1.2, I've been stuck at the boot logo for 3 days now. I've tried changing ports, host, turning of AV and FW. I'll get to the "Verifying iPhone Restore" and it just freezes from there. Normally I run into 3194, 21, 1601. Right now I'm dealing with 3194 if somebody can help me I would much appreciate it.

I just got hit with Error 1602 now???
Even though I am system administrator it keeps telling me to contact the system administrator to save the hosts file. Won't let me RUN/OPEN as admin either.. So I can't do anything that involves editing it except for rename and delete or move it... I'm on 6.1.3 and I also did the snowbreeze thing and I keep getting this 3194 error. I just want my iPhone back to normal...

There's an error in Step 7 of this article. Apologies to everyone above.
Correction: This article was written with stock IPSW's in mind. To restore with a custom IPSW, your device must be in pwned DFU mode and not the regular DFU mode. This can be achieved with either redsnow or iREB. On redsnow, go to Extras -> Pwned DFU.

Later, I'll write a full article on how to put iDevices in pwned dfu mode.

@Blanco Check the post for the updated info masked in red.

@Shawn. Can you move the hosts file to desktop?

Hi yaar, did you use redsnow to put your iPhone in pwned dfu mode?
Yeah i did use redsn0w. I am really frustrated now, since a week i am trying different method but none of them worked for me. some guys are telling that specific methods worked for them but those didnt work for me, example hosts file, tinyumbrella, downloaded different ipsw file. none worked.

so here are the screenshots:
The time it reaches  " Restoring iPhone firmware..."  after a few seconds error 3194 appears.
here is the phone screen when the error appears.

i hope u guys help.

1. When you edited the hosts file, are you sure that your changes were saved? On windows you would have to 'run as administrator' to be able to save the changes to the file.

2. Is your phone jailbroken?

3. Try this with TinyUmbrella, use at least version 7.12 (Download Link?)

- Close iTunes, then launch TinyUmbrella
- Connect your iPhone to the computer
- Click on Start TSS Server
- Put your iPhone into DFU mode.
- iTunes would open back up saying "Device in recovery mode"
- Hold the shift key and press 'Restore' on iTunes.
- Restore with the IPSW file you downloaded.
Thank you for replying.
Yes, i am sure the file is saved as i logged in from Administrator user and my phone is not jailbroken.
After following the exact steps through tinyumbrella i got the error 4014 at the beginning even the phone didnt turn on to show the apple logo from the DFU mode.

Error 4014 may indicate a hardware problem (like somewhere along the usb connection), so try using a different USB cable.

If that doesn't work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the usb driver by following this procedure:
- Close itunes
- Connect your iphone to PC
- Put iPhone in DFU mode
- Go to Device manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers > Apple Mobile Device USB Driver. Right click on it and choose uninstall.
- After uninstall, go to Action > Scan for hardware changes. This should detect the driver and reinstall.
- Now try restoring your iPhone again.

If that doesn't work, a last resort would be to get your charging port flex cable checked (the flex cable that controls the usb port of your iPhone).

Hope it works out for you.
